The Susquehanna Retriever Club holds two AKC Licensed Retriever Hunt Tests each year. The two tests are generally held on the same weekend each year, one in May and one in October.
AKC Hunt Tests involve a dog against a standard. According to Chapter 4 Section 2 of the Regulations & Guidelines for AKC Hunt Tests for Retrievers "Judges shall score the dogs on (a) their natural abilities including Marking (memory), Style, Perserverance/courage/hunting, and (b) to relatively greater degrees in Senior and Master Hunting Tests their Trainability as evidenced in steadiness, control, response and delivery". Dogs are tested on land and in water and must perform equally.
Beginning dogs and handlers generally start at the Junior Hunt Test level and work towards running dogs in the Senior and Master Hunting Tests. Junior Hunt Test dogs are required to do (2) single marks on land and (2) on water. Senior and Master Test dogs are required to retrieve multiple marks, have the ability to handle on blind retrieves, and generally have three to five different test series.
